What is UPSC? 


Before knowing what is UPSC, you must know about PSC. PSC is called Public Service Commission. which was formed on 1st October, 1926. Later on 26 January 1950, after some changes, the name of PSC was changed to UPSC. UPSC is an agency created by the Indian government to conduct various other exams like Civil Services Examination (CSE), ESE and NDA for recruitment to 24 different civil services.


UPSC also conducts exams for Group A and Group B government jobs along with higher level posts like IAS, IPS. For which the entire process of written examinations to interview and appointment is completed by UPSC. UPSC exam is one of the toughest exams to be conducted in India. Functions of UPSC (Union Public Service Commission)


  • The main function of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is to organize the examination for the recruitment of civil services and many other government officers.


  • It is also the job of this agency to recruit in many government jobs through direct interview.


  • To prescribe and amend the recruitment rules for the services and various government posts under the government.


  • The UPSC also acts as an advisor to the Commission in matters which the President of India deals with to the Commission.

Eligibility for UPSC


  • Must be an Indian citizen.


  • You must be at least 21 and at most 30 years of age. There is 5 years concession for SC and ST candidates and 3 years concession for backward class candidates.


  • A graduate of any branch or a candidate appearing for the final year examination of the degree can apply for this examination. There is no degree requirement for this.

UPSC Recruitment Process 


The UPSC exam consists of three stages


 Prelims

 Mains

 Personality test / interview


UPSC Prelim Exam Pattern


The prelims exam is a qualifying exam. The marks obtained in the prelims are not counted in the final merit list. Both the papers in the prelims exam are of objective type. General Studies II (CSAT) determines paper eligibility. 33% marks are required to pass the second paper. Premals exam has negative marking. For each wrong answer, 1/3 marks are deducted from the marks obtained.


UPSC Mains Exam Pattern


There are 9 papers in UPSC Mains Exam. Students who pass the Prelims can appear for the Mains. All the papers of Mains examination are of descriptive type. Bilingual papers determine the eligibility. UPSC Mains examination is conducted in a period of 5 to 7 days. Papers A and B determine eligibility. Candidates are required to get at least 25% marks in their Paper 1 to Paper 7 each.


UPSC interview


The interview is the final stage of the UPSC exam. Quality list is prepared on the basis of interview / personality test and main exam. Interview test is of 275 marks. Thus, the total marks for quality list is 2025. Interviewers judge the mental and social characteristics of students by asking general knowledge / interest questions.


 Some of the qualities that the interviewer finds in the students are mental alertness, ability to assimilate anything, clear and logical thinking, ability to make decisions, leadership qualities, intellectual qualities and moral integrity.
